"Chat, I'm not feeling well"... Should you really ask AI for health advice?

By Ayan Wehliye, RN BScN

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is a powerful and evolving technology that has the potential to support and transform not only how we work, but also how we manage personal aspects of our lives, including our health. While GenAI can be a useful tool, it’s important to use it responsibly and with integrity, both professionally and personally. Check out these tips to help you make informed decisions about your health on and offline.

GenAI tools and your health

GenAI tools are becoming more common in healthcare, from “symptom checkers” and chatbots to online health quizzes. While these tools can offer quick information, it’s important to remember that not all health information online is accurate or reliable.

In fact, some doctors in Ontario have raised concerns about a growing trend called “DIY Medicine,” where people are turning to the internet to diagnose and treat health issues instead of speaking with qualified healthcare professionals.

AI may be helpful sometimes for general health information, but it’s not a replacement for expert medical advice.

Tips for using GenAI-related health tools

If you do decide to use an GenAI-supported health tool, we recommend reviewing the tips below to ensure that you (and your personal health info) stay protected.

Check your sources

Seek health information from reliable health organizations such as your local public health unit, primary care clinic or hospital. Visit our Student Health website for accurate and evidence-based information on a variety of health topics.

Protect your privacy

Your personal health information is sensitive and should only be shared with your healthcare provider through secure, PHIPA-compliant platforms. Many AI tools collect, store and can even share your personal health information without consent. Avoid sharing details such as your name, age, date of birth, address, phone number or any other identifying information. Think twice before uploading documents or using platforms that do not clearly explain how your data is collected and protected.

If you are unsure whether an GenAI tool is secure, it's best not to use it.

Use AI tools with caution

Remember, GenAI lacks human judgment and relies on algorithms and data, which are not always be accurate and may reflect bias. This increases the risk for misdiagnosis and misleading heath advice, and it should never be used as a substitute for seeking advice from healthcare professionals.

Talk to a healthcare professional

As York students, you have access to “Ask a Nurse” where you can ask Public Health Nurses your general health-related questions and seek expert health advice. If you’re feeling unwell or looking to be assessed by a healthcare provider, visit our primary care page to find a clinic near you.

Pro Tip: Inspire yourself and empower your health! Connect with experts at our Health Fairs across all three campuses.

As students, you’re resourceful and driven to find solutions. While GenAI tools can offer convenience and quick answers, it can oversimplify or misinterpret health issues completely. As a Public Health Nurse, I encourage you to seek out evidence-based health information, protect your privacy and ask for help when needed!
