Key takeaways from my study abroad experience

Written by Tenda Kiggundu

For my study abroad I went to Athens, Greece for a month for a modern Greek history course (History 3357). We saw many parts of the country and I was able to learn more about Greek history in its literal context. It was an amazing experience!

By being there, I was able to have more tangible examples of the lessons we were learning every day. I was able to visit landmarks, museums and galleries in a new country. I also was able to try new foods, see new places and even learn a few terms in a new language. This experience was truly nourishing and I definitely am the better for it. So, here are some key takeaways of what I learned during my summer abroad experience and how it changed me for the better.

Put yourself out there

It’s important to make an effort to interact with new people in new spaces. I ended up having a bunch of conversations with my fellow study abroad classmates about a multitude of things, and realized how are lives are so similar yet so different. We all go to York, yet most of us had previously never interacted before. Take advantage of that situation; there's so much to learn and connect about.

I also spent a lot of time having random conversations with locals in coffee shops and around town. People have so much to say and often will offer you such a different perspective.

Pro tip: Talk to locals ask them about the best places to get specific things, like “Where is the best grocery store?” or “What's a good restaurant around here?” Google is great, but there's nothing better than real life experience!

The importance of being present

Try to remember where you are. Take every day in as it comes take it slow, pay attention to the details of every lecture. It can become a bit overwhelming during a study abroad program; life moves so fast. It's important to immerse yourself in the experience rather than simply going through the motions. Put your phone down, slow your pace and engage with your surroundings, whether that’s savouring a local meal or going on walks to explore and familiarize yourself with the place. By staying mindful in each moment, you create deeper connections to the place and its culture.

Pro tip: Try to walk to as many places as you can and familiarize yourself with your neighbourhood and the surroundings of your university.

First day exploring the city with my roommates! This was right outside our classroom.

Different is good!

It can feel intimidating to leave home and step away from everything familiar for an extended period of time. Traveling abroad is a break from your usual school routine and what your life typically looks like. But that difference is where the growth happens. Experiencing new cultures, meeting different people and adapting to unfamiliar situations broadens your horizons and perspectives, and help you understand the world in ways you never could at home.

By embracing the unknown, you not only learn about other places and people, but also discover new strengths, skills and ways of seeing the world within yourself. I learned to empathize more and understand how difference is ultimately a strength. A new environment may feel different than what your used to, but that means there's something to learn there.
