Going on academic exchange can be an exciting experience, but starting a new adventure can be slightly overwhelming. It’s important to prepare yourself before you go so that you can focus on getting what you want out of your exchange. Saying “yes” to an academic exchange isn’t just about earning credits abroad; it’s about gaining a fresh perspective, building lifelong friendships and growing in ways a classroom alone can’t offer. To help you start your journey, I came up with a few key steps that helped me stay focused and get the most out of my time abroad!
Be intentional
Try to be intentional from the start. Before you apply, take time to reflect on what you hope to learn, experience and achieve. Does the program or location align with those goals?
Once you’ve applied, stay focused on your intentions. Do research on your destination.
Before you get there, try to connect with other students who are also going on exchange– try put in some effort to build friendships before you go.
While you’re on exchange, try to step out of your comfort zone, build connections with people who challenge and inspire you and make the most of every opportunity!
Pro tip: Before the exchange, there will be a pre-departure session where you and all your classmates will be added to a group chat. Use this as an opportunity to socialize!
The “academic” in academic exchange
It's easy to feel like you’re on holiday when it’s summer and you are in a new country, but it’s important to remember that you are there for school. During my exchange experience, classes were often held at historical sites or in museums, so use those opportunities to take notes, photos and videos when you’re allowed to. Your assignments will be more fruitful and better informed.
Pro tip: Taking handwritten notes can be a big help, especially in places where phones may not be allowed. Take a pen and paper everywhere!
Prioritize your goals
Being in a large group can be lots of fun- it's exciting to be around so many different and new people, but don’t let this be a distraction. If there is anything specific you want to see or do, prioritize those first. You wouldn't want to leave your exchange feeling unsatisfied or like you didn’t have the chance to do and see everything you wanted to. It’s easy to get caught up in group plans, spontaneous trips and endless opportunities, and while saying “yes” is part of the fun, it’s also important to stay focused on your experience. Whether you want to try new foods, see some sites or get ahead on your assignments, put your goals and ambitions first.
Pro Tip: Make a list of the things you would like to accomplish while on academic exchange. It will help keep you on track to get everything done if you have it all written down.
Organize your time
One of the best things you can do while on exchange is staying organized. Get as much work done as early as possible, because you’ll be spending a lot of time moving around while you're on exchange. When you stay on top of deadlines and assignments, you free up time to actually enjoy your surroundings without the stress of last-minute tasks. Trust me — it’s worth it!
An academic exchange is more than just travel. It’s an opportunity to challenge yourself, discover new perspectives and build valuable practical skills for your future.
