Achieving balance during your first year at York

Written by Guest Blogger

Hi there, I'm Hodan Garbiye, a third-year Sociology student with a non-traditional background. I've worked in higher education equity for over three years, was raised in Toronto and love supporting students around the world. But, I still somehow get lost on campus.

Whether you’re entirely new to York or a returning student, university life can be daunting. From competing assignment deadlines to managing your extracurriculars and social life, things can start to fall by the wayside, and at times that can even include academic success.

Did you know that York has many student success services, useful strategies and campus resources? Here are a few tips that will help you stay on track this year!

Staying consistent is key

One of the most important ingredients in academic success is consistency. Consistent class attendance, consistently meeting deadlines and consistent study habits. That’s easier said than done, so let’s break down what it actually means to be consistent.

Keeping consistency is made possible by building a routine that works for you and staying accountable.

In my case, every Sunday, I set my agenda for the week ahead. Sometimes plans change but by being intentional about my goals, I create a routine that helps me achieve them.

Showing up regularly (whether to class or to your own study session) requires some effort and planning, but it can be done. Plus, it’s so rewarding to look back on your streak while giving yourself grace when you take a day off.

But let’s be honest: staying consistent is easier when you know what supports are available to you.

Need support? York has you covered

That’s where York’s community steps in. We’ve all struggled with a tough course or two in our time, and, speaking from experience, it can be stressful to navigate difficulties alone. But, you should know you don’t have to!

Regardless of your program, a support system exists for nearly any course you may be enrolled in. Here are some examples:

  • Le Salon Francophone: Taking French as an elective this term? If you find yourself struggling with pronunciation, reach out to Le Salon Francophone over at Glendon Campus to practice with peers while building your confidence. And oui, Keele students are more than welcome to reach out!
  • The Writing Centre: Unsure about how your paper is shaping up? The Writing Centre is there for you. From individual appointments to group sessions and grammar workshops, the team there is dedicated to your growth as a writer.
  • SNACK: Stressed about that statistics class next semester? Drop by the Student Numeracy Assistance Centre at Keele (also called SNACK) for numeracy support across a wide variety of disciplines.
  • ESL OLC: If you want to strengthen your English-speaking skills, connect with a team of ESL experts at the English as a Second Language Open Learning Centre (ESL OLC).
  • Your TAs and professors: As your educators, your teaching teams are invested in your success as a student.

Try this: during your first few weeks, set aside some time to connect with a professor you resonated with or a TA you have questions for. Don’t feel nervous about reaching out! They’re here to help. Send an email or arrange a time to chat after class.

These are just a few of the resources you can build into your student experience to fill gaps before they start affecting your final grades. You can explore even more services on the Current Students website.

Don’t forget to have fun and take breaks!

Getting a degree is hard work, but remember to take breaks and slow down, too. Catch your breath by Strong Pond and take in the changing leaves during the fall, or take a walk under the cherry blossom branches on Arboretum lane during the spring. You can also get to know Toronto as an international student with York International by signing up for a Neighborhood Exploration walk.

Whatever you do, don’t forget: you’re here at York for a short time. Make the most of it, do your best and have fun!
