Mackenzie De Zilva is a third-year Sociology student minoring in Communications at York University’s Glendon Campus. She is driven by her curiosity in how society, media and culture shape people’s everyday lives. Some of her favourite hobbies include colouring, drawing, hanging out with friends, watching her favourite shows and writing.
One of the biggest things I have learned as a student is that balance does not just happen – it’s something you build through trial and error. I’m Kenzie, a third-year student studying Sociology and Communications at York University’s Glendon Campus. Between work, classes, studying and making time for friends, being a university student can sometimes feel like there’s never enough time in the day. But once you find a good rhythm that works for you, everything starts to feel a bit less stressful, and you can enjoy your experience in university so much more!
Starting the day at work
I start my day by heading to Glendon’s Welcome Center for my shift as an e-ambassador on the Student Recruitment and Applicant Relations team. This role lets me connect with other students, staff and faculty by creating content and authentically representing Glendon on different social media platforms. Being a part of the on-campus Work/Study program is very convenient and flexible with my school schedule.
Making the most of resources
After work, I head to Keele Campus for class using the free shuttle. This is one of those underrated campus perks that makes student life so much easier. Taking the shuttle has saved me so much time and money! After my class at Keele, I like to grab something to eat before catching the shuttle back to Glendon.
Time to recharge!
Commuting can be tiring. That's why when I get back to my residence at Glendon, I make sure to set aside an hour or two to unwind. This includes doing things I enjoy like collaging, colouring, watching my favourite show or hanging out with friends. A trick I’ve learned is to treat my down time like any other commitment! When you plan for it, you’re more likely to protect it.
Consistency is key
Before getting ready for bed and doomscrolling on my phone, I like to read through notes and check my schedule for the upcoming weeks. Doing this helps me stay prepared for assignments, tests or other commitments that are coming up. Studying doesn't have to be intense to be effective – being consistent is what really helps you retain the information you need.
Taking it one day at a time
Overall, being a full-time student with a job can be challenging at times, but it’s important to remind yourself that your routine doesn’t have to be perfect right away. By the end of the day, I feel accomplished, not exhausted. Days like this have taught me that success isn’t about doing everything at once. One good day at a time really adds up!

- Set a schedule for yourself to help balance school, work, social life and downtime.
- Apply for a role in the Work/Study program that fits your interests. You’ll gain career experience and earn money, all while being a student!
