Toronto in summer: Where to go, what to do

Written by Michelle Nguyen

Two years ago I arrived in Toronto as an international student, suitcase in hand, heart full of curiosity. The city felt enormous, a patchwork of neighborhoods, cultures and possibilities. At first, everything was new and unfamiliar. But slowly, the sounds, the faces and the little rituals that marked my days made what once felt overwhelming start to feel familiar. Bit by bit, the city became mine. That sense of connection grew over time, through changing seasons, late-night subway rides and unexpected conversations. And for me, no season reveals Toronto’s heart quite like summer.

Summer moves differently here with mellow mornings and vibrant nights. It peels back winter’s layers and reveals the city’s brightest corners. If you’re new or just starting to find your rhythm in this city, here are the experiences and places that captured my heart and how you, too, can enjoy your summer in the city (without breaking the bank)!

City escapes

The Toronto Islands

If you only choose one outdoor escape this summer, let it be the Toronto Islands!

The ferry ride alone is a classic Toronto experience, offering a postcard view of the skyline. Once you arrive, the downtown hustle fades away, replaced by quiet beaches, tree-lined paths and a rare sense of calm.

Ward’s Island is my favourite. Stop by The Riviera, sit on their dreamy patio and let time move gently. Their island smash burger? Still thinking about it.

Toronto Islands

Pro tip: To really soak in the beauty of the islands, I’d recommend hopping on a bike! Bike Share Toronto has stations right on the islands. You can unlock FREE 90-minute trips on e-bikes, or you can get a 20% student discount on an annual membership.

Iconic attractions

Toronto’s skyline is iconic for a reason. Whether you’re craning your neck beneath the CN Tower or wandering through the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), these landmarks are more than just tourist stops, they're the backdrop of countless core memories.

If you're planning to visit a few of the big attractions, I’d recommend using CityPASS. It bundles five of Toronto’s top spots and can save you tons on admission fees!

Pro tip: If you've got a student ID, don't miss these fantastic perks:

  • The ROM offers free admission on Tuesdays for full-time post-secondary students (just remember to bring your student ID).
  • If you're under 25, you can get free year-round access to the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO)

Parks and vibes

Toronto’s parks are where my love for this city truly crystallized, which is something I never experienced back home in Vietnam. Each one has its own rhythm and story. Here are my picks:

  • Riverdale Park: This is my sunset go-to! The hill here offers a picturesque view of Toronto’s skyline, especially at golden hour.

  • Trinity Bellwoods Park: A classic for a reason. Whether I’m people-watching (which I love!), wandering the leafy trails or just stretching out under the trees, this park always delivers. Tuesday afternoons are extra special with a cozy farmers’ market!

Indoor gems

Not every summer day is about chasing the sun. Some days call for stillness or a quiet place to be.

The Toronto Reference Library has become my second home. There’s space to focus, and after a long study session I’ll stop by Molly Tea nearby.

For something different, the Bata Shoe Museum is a niche stop, with $8 student admission and exhibits that turn shoes into windows in history.
