Senioritis: Staying motived in your final year of high school

Written by Tenda Kiggundu

You're at the end of your high school journey and it's easy to feel exhausted and tired. You’ve worked hard to get here but for some reason it feels like it’s never going end. In many ways you’re in a rush to graduate, but to make all of that happen you must fulfil some key steps first. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves and instead focus on what's in front of us right now. Here are a few ways to curb these feelings – often called senioritis – and to keep you motivated to prepare for the next step: university!

Stay motivated and focused

School work may start feeling monotonous at this point, and I know it must feel like you have done this a million times before. But it's important to maintain momentum! I broke down my tasks to make them feel more manageable and set personal goals along with my school deadlines to make sure I finished everything on time.

Pro tip: Create a schedule that interests you. Mix things up try using visual aids to study or introduce colour into your note taking.

It's all about contribution: some days your energy may feel like you only have 10% to give, but it's important to try and do even small tasks, as they will all add up eventually. And, you will be surprised how quickly things will wrap up!

Take care of yourself

During my last year of high school, I experienced major burnout, and I realized how important it is to take breaks and create balance. Prioritizing self-care and mental health are essential. Make sure to treat yourself!

It's also important that you get enough rest. It will be easier to be productive if your energy levels are high, and pushing yourself too hard is never good in the long run. All you can do is your best and it’s important to remember that!

Make the most of the end – and a new beginning

It’s important to stay on top of your schoolwork, exams and university applications, but also remember to spend time with family and friends. Be sure to visit your favourite spots in your hometown that you may not have as much time to see when you head off to university. These are the moments that turn into memories to bring with you to keep you motivated and excited for what’s ahead.

Senioritis in your final year of high school is almost like a rite of passage. Every phase of your life might feel exhausting at some point, but don't be in a rush to get it over with, you’ll be surprised how much you miss even the mundane parts of it once you graduate. It's important to finish knowing you did your best and tried to complete everything you set your mind to. Finish on a high note because when you look back, you’ll want to remember that you gave it your all and made the most of every moment.
