Scholarship applications: How to finance your studies

Written by Tina Mehri

Figuring out how to pay for university is a big part of planning your future, and it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Whether you’re looking ahead to your first semester, supporting a student or already studying at York, there are several ways to make your education more affordable.

From scholarships and bursaries to OSAP and on-campus work opportunities, here’s a clear guide to understanding your options and getting started early!

OSAP, scholarships and bursaries: What’s the difference?

OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program)

OSAP provides financial support from the Ontario government through a mix of grants (money you don’t repay) and loans (money you repay after graduation). It helps eligible Ontario residents cover costs like tuition, books, supplies and living expenses.

OSAP is needs-based, meaning the amount of funding you receive depends on your financial situation, living arrangements and course load.

Pro tip: If you're an Ontario resident applying to York, it’s a good idea to review how OSAP works and check your eligibility early through York’s OSAP information page.

Applying early allows time for application processing and document review, so your funding is ready when the term starts. You can also find general guidance on funding your degree through York’s Student Financial Services.

Scholarships

Scholarships are merit-based awards. They recognize achievements such as academic excellence, leadership, community involvement, artistic talent or athletic performance. Many York scholarships are available to both domestic and international students through York’s Scholarships and Awards page.

Bursaries

Bursaries are need-based awards designed to assist students who require additional financial support. Unlike loans, bursaries do not need to be repaid.

At York, there are bursaries for:

  • first-year students;
  • upper-year students;
  • international students;
  • students with accessibility needs and more.

Start your search early

You don’t need to wait for an admission offer to begin applying for scholarships and bursaries; you just need to be an active applicant to York University. Applying early increases your chances of being considered for more opportunities and gives you time to gather documents and prepare strong applications. You can start your application to York through the application page and put yourself in the best position for funding opportunities!

Pro tip: Many awards have deadlines throughout the year. Create a calendar reminder to check deadlines regularly, so you don’t miss out!

Explore York’s funding tools and resources

York offers a range of resources to support students. Here are a few places to start:

Talk with your student

Parents and supporters play a key role in the university transition. Having open conversations about finances, budgeting and expectations can help students feel supported and informed as they make decisions.

Encourage your student to explore campus resources, meet with advisors and ask questions. Financial literacy is part of the university learning experience, too!

Financing university is a team effort, and there are many pathways to support your educational goals. Whether through OSAP, scholarships, bursaries or Work/Study opportunities, York is here to help you build a plan that works for you.
