Nine questions my mom has about York

My mom and I

As an international or domestic student, it’s always a bit tricky to explain to our parents what exactly it is we do at university — especially considering how diverse the subjects, extracurriculars and student life are.

Every time I mention York, my mom gives me the look that says, “I have 12 follow‑up questions." So instead of answering them one call at a time, here’s everything she (and probably every parent) wants to know about life at York University.

What do you study?

I’m studying Communications and Media, which means a mix of lectures, tutorials, seminars and group work. I have very few exams, but my courses have exciting multimedia projects that make you think outside the box!

Pro tip: Use York's program search tool to explore programs based on your area of interest, preferred Faculty and more.

What is York like day-to-day?

During the weekdays, its lively and busy, like a small city. I love that my classes are scattered across buildings that aren’t too far from each other, giving me the chance to explore campus. After and in-between classes, students usually grab food, head to club meetings or various events on campus. Weekends are slower, but I love my walks most when it’s quiet.

Do you get good food there?

Yes, there’s so many options to choose from! York has three big food courts and many dining halls. Sushi-Q near the Quad has the best comfort food of all time: ramen! The campus also has cafés, global cuisine and snacks for every mood. If all else fails, there’s always Tim Hortons.

Pro-tip: Check out the dining directory for all food options.

Was it easy to make friends?

It took a little time, but yes! Most of my friends came from the clubs I was in. York is huge, so once you start putting yourself out there even a bit, you meet people fast.

What extracurriculars are you involved in?

I’m part of United South Asians at York and the dance team for the Indian Cultural Association. I’m also the Vice President of the Communications & Media Students Association. All these extracurriculars give me a break from academics, help me meet people who share my interests and build my professional skills.

Pro-tip: YU Connect is the online hub for student life and involvement at York.

What’s your favourite spot on campus?

Stong Pond is York’s most scenic and well-kept secret — known only to a few. Another favourite is the Break Room in the First Student Centre, with its arcade and affordable food options!

Pro-tip: Here’s a list of cozy study spots and the best spots to chill on campus!

How do you spend your time outside school?

Taking the TTC straight from York Subway Station to downtown is my favourite way to spend the weekends. Exploring iconic areas like Kensington, Harbourfront and Ossington Ave give you a glimpse into the diversity that Toronto has to offer!

Is York diverse?

There’s always something happening on campus — cultural clubs, festivals, food events, performances, fairs — you name it. York is incredibly diverse and you can feel it everywhere on campus.

What if a student struggles academically?

York has tons of support: peer tutoring, academic advisors, writing centres and workshops. I’m a regular at the academic advising office when I need to decide my courses for the upcoming school year. Help is always available if you reach for it!

Pro-tip: Check out the Student Services offered at York.
