How to prep during the last summer before university

Written by Tenda Kiggundu

Your last summer before university will come quick. You may feel like you have so many things you want to get covered, and it can be easy to forget what actually needs to get done. So, let's break it down into some quick reminders, both school related and just some other inventory items you might want to check off your list to make sure you are extra prepared!

Make time for administrative tasks

Try to get all your administrative tasks done as soon as possible to make sure the rest of your summer is a breeze.

Check out York's admitted page for the steps to becoming a York student after accepting your offer. It will help break down your next steps, give you information on registering for classes and information about orientation week.

Another important to-do is to plan ahead for finances, especially for your first semester, so you have room to adjust to your new environment. I made a first-year fund because I knew moving to a new city would excite me and I was probably going to spend more than usual. Saving up will give you bit more leeway to go all out.

Pro tip: Go through your emails and check your spam folder too so you don't miss any information about orientation week or other important sign-ups and enrolment dates.

An opportunity for a for a fresh start

I know that initially it may feel a bit daunting for all this change to happen at once, but everything is happening in the correct timing—don’t doubt yourself! Look at this as an opportunity for a fresh start. I spent my final summer trying a bunch of new things like volunteering and getting as many experiences as possible. It helps you discover what you like, which will better prepare you for the decisions a university student has to make.

Check out concerts, art galleries, new locations, go on road trips or check out new restaurants and styles of food. Just live and experience and absorb as much as you can.

Get in that quality time

End your summer on a great note and try to cherish every moment with your high school friends and your home community if you're moving. And even if you aren't moving, this is a still an important point, aim to create as many memories as possible!

During my final summer, my friends made a checklist of activities that we had to complete together before we all left for university. It kept things fun and was a nice walk down memory lane. Quality time with your loved ones doesn't always have to be extravagant but can be simple; it’s just about being intentional about making and spending time.

Pro tip: Check out the Future Students section on YU Blog for more information and tips on what to do ahead of your university journey.

I understand that there might be a lot of pressure for your last summer before university to be the best, and it is always described as perfect or idealistic. But honestly, it can also be simple and productive!
