Hidden gems at York: Spots to explore on campus

Written by Michelle Nguyen

When I first arrived at York, the campus felt huge and a little overwhelming. During my first campus tour, I mostly stayed at the main destinations since most campus tours highlight the main buildings and landmarks. However, some of the best places on campus are the ones you discover later on your own. It took time before I started wandering a little further and noticing the places that make campus feel more personal. It could be a quiet floor to study, a cozy place to grab food or a peaceful corner to reset between classes that not everyone knows about.

Here are a few hidden gems on York’s campus that I wish I knew sooner.

Study spots worth discovering

When you visit campus, it’s easy to assume that the main library floors are where everyone studies. Many students naturally head to the lower levels of Scott Library, where you will often see group tables filled with students working together, chatting or quickly reviewing notes before a lecture. These floors are lively and convenient, which is why they tend to be the most crowded.

However, York also has several quiet study spaces that students often discover later in their university journey.

One place worth checking out is the fifth floor of Scott Library. Many of my friends consider it one of the best hidden study spots on campus because it is noticeably quieter than the lower floors and ideal for focused work.

You can also stop by the Second Student Centre, especially the third floor. This level has smaller seating areas that feel more tucked away, making it a nice place to read, work on assignments or take a quiet break between classes.

Trust me, you will treasure these spots when exam season comes around!

Food gems for a quick break

As a bit of a foodie on campus, I have probably tried almost every restaurant in and around York. Over time, I realized that campus food tends to fall into two main areas that students rely on: the Quad and York Lanes

The Quad is one of those places that feels a little further from the centre of campus. It's a popular stop for students who live in residence or around York Village, as well as for anyone looking to try a variety of cuisine options. One of my personal favourites there is Sushi Q, where I usually go for their rose tteokbokki.

York Lanes is easily one of the best food hubs on campus. Located near the centre of campus and just a short walk from York University Subway Station, it is a destination many students pass through at least once a day. Because of its convenient location near major lecture halls and classrooms, it is where you might grab a quick lunch, meet friends between classes or run into people you know.

Pro tip: The First Student Centre was recently renovated and now has the Break Room, which is a really nice space to unwind. I’d also recommend checking out the events they host because you might come across workshops, activities or free food!

Scenic spots to reset

York’s campus is one of the largest in Canada, which means there are plenty of hidden outdoor spaces. When I need a break, I often walk toward Stong Pond. Watching the water and the surrounding greenery always makes me feel more grounded and recharged.

Moments like these remind me that campus is not just about lecture halls. There are also small, quiet corners where you can reconnect with yourself in ways that feel hard to find anywhere else.

Pro tip: For something a little different, consider visiting the Goldfarb Gallery. It features rotating contemporary exhibitions and offers a creative space to explore, especially if you’re an art lover like me.

Campus tours usually show you the highlights, but the places that end up meaning the most are often the ones you discover on your own.
