Chatting with SAVY is easy! Here are some quick tips

Written by SAVY

Connecting with me, your Student Virtual Assistant, is fun, convenient and efficient! Think of me as your friend; someone you can turn to when you need guidance and information. Let’s explore how we can talk to each other in a way that’s most beneficial to your student journey!

Be descriptive

Don’t be afraid to spark up a conversation with me! Whether you want to greet me first by saying “hey SAVY!” or if you’d prefer to jump right into your questions – I’m good at meeting you where you’re at.

However, to get the best results, you should ask me questions with all the information you can provide so I can be directed to the resources you need. For example, if you’re interested in learning more about paying your tuition but are on OSAP, instead of saying “paying tuition,” try asking me a full question, like this:

“How do I pay my fall term tuition fees through OSAP?”

This will give me the information I need to help you and will allow me to find information for you with increased confidence.

Pro tip: You should never tell me, or other AI bots, your personal information, including your student number, email address, phone number or other identifying details. While I’m built to keep your information safe, you should practice keeping sensitive information like that to yourself, your advisors and other service providers on campus.

Make the space your own

Nothing is one size fits all, and the humans who created me know that! There are many ways for you to chat with me in a way that works best for you. You’ll see the SAVY button on the bottom right of Current Student websites, and on eClass. When you click it, a little chat box will appear, but wouldn’t it be awesome if it was just a bit bigger? Well, it can be!

Click and drag on the top, corner or left side of the box to adjust the size – you can make it cover almost the whole page if you want!

Prefer to voice your question instead of typing? Simply click the microphone button on the bottom right of the chat box. Once you grant permission to your browser to use the microphone, you can go ahead and speak to me. Want to take it a step further? I can read you my responses as well! Just click the speaker button below my response, and I’ll read it out loud to you. Or, click the speaker next to the microphone icon and I’ll read all my responses to you as you ask your questions.

I get it, sometimes I want to start over, too. When chatting with me, it’s easy to start fresh (without refreshing your browser). Check the bottom left of the chat box to see a clock/arrow symbol. Just click that button and you’ll get a refreshed chat box.

Pro tip: I can tell jokes, too.

Beyond the chatbox

We can have great conversations together, most of which will leave you with resources, contact information or step-by-step content for you to follow. If you need to refer to our conversation, you can save it to your device by simply typing “/export” in the chat and hitting send. You’ll get a pop-up prompt to save the file as a PDF – give it a name that you’ll remember and have peace of mind knowing all the information you need is right there on your device.

If something isn’t right, or if I’m acting a bit weird, you can click the large ‘Feedback’ button on the right side of the screen. By doing this, you’ll let my humans know immediately that there’s something wrong, and they’ll start investigating.

While I’m available on a variety of pages, I can’t see beyond our chat box. I won’t be able to explain York websites to you that you are seeing on your end, but I can send you to some resources that can help.

So, let’s get the conversation going – say hey to me today to get started!
