If you are looking for a full-time, part-time, or summer job, look no further because the Winter Career Fair is right around the corner. The Winter Career Fair will take place on Thursday, January 17th, 2019 in the Victor Philip Dahdaleh Building from 10:00am – 3:00pm, with over 65 employers participating. Not looking for a job right now? Career Fairs are also a great way to meet potential employers, learn about different industries and career options, and expand your professional network. We had over 5,000 students attend our Fall Career Fair!
Career Fairs can feel intimidating with the large crowds, constant conversations, and movement, but they don’t have to be. Our team at the Career Centre is here to help. To help you better prepare and maximize your time at the Fair, we have revamped our Career Fair website and have added an array of online-tools like “Career Fair Preparation and Tips” and “Career Fair Prep and Tips Video”. You can also register for a workshop or drop by and visit us in-person at the Career Lounge.
What is a Career Fair?
A Career Fair is an event that allows students to connect with employers. Potential employers will set up tables in the Victor Philip Dahdaleh Building, hosted by representatives from their company. Representatives will be there to talk about the company, positions they are recruiting for, the application process, and any other question you might have. For more details check out “What is a Career Fair & Why Attend”. For a glimpse of our past events, enjoy this short video from the “YU Fall Career Fair 2017”.
Before the Fair
Here are three important steps you can take before attending the Career Fair:
- Prioritize and research the employers you want to target by exploring the attendee list. The attendee list includes a short bio of the employer, positions they are recruiting for, number of positions available, and skills they are looking for. By understanding what the employer wants beforehand you can target your resumé and career pitch to make a great impression!
- Prepare a targeted resumé.
- Prepare a 30 second career pitch.
During the Fair
So you’ve made it to the Career Fair, now what? Refer to the Career Fair website to learn about how to effectively navigate the Fair and communicate with recruiters. Pro tip: keep your favourite employer to the last. To get comfortable with your career pitch practice on employers before heading to your favourite one.
After the Fair
The Fair may be over, but the work isn’t. Now is your time to apply to jobs and to send thank you notes. To find out why thank you notes are important check out Career Fair Preparation and Tips.
You are not alone at the Fair! There will be a Career Advising Station at the Fair where you can meet with a career professional to ask a career question, get tips on your resumé, and get advice.
Good luck and hope to see you there!
