Are you looking to improve your study skills for the new school year? Would you like to become a better student? If your answer to these questions is yes, I suggest that you check out the various study skills workshops York U is offering this fall! If you missed our previous #YUBlog post “Time Management Tips for York U Students” based on the Time Management Workshop offered by Learning Skills Services, you might want to familiarize yourself with the practical tips covered in these sessions. York is committed to supporting your academic success, and the following workshops can improve your learning skills to help you achieve your goals.
Here are a few workshops you can attend at York:
1. Time Management Workshop
Learning to balance school, work and a social life is one of the biggest challenges students face. It can be hard to know how much time you need to study or complete different projects, especially in your first year of university. If you find yourself rushing to get everything finished or wondering if hanging out with your friends for an extra five minutes will cut into your study time, you may want to attend the Time Management Workshop offered by Learning Skills Services. During this session, you’ll learn how to manage your time wisely, create a schedule that works for you and track your progress to avoid procrastination.
The first Time Management workshop of the month is taking place on September 11th, 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Sound & Moving Images Library, Room 124. Learning Skills Services workshops are open to all York students, and there is no need to register. To see all Learning Skills Services workshops, take a look at their website.
2. Reading & Note-Taking Workshop
When it’s time to study for exams, you’ll be relying on the notes you took throughout the term to refresh your memory of the course material. If you’re having trouble finding a good note-taking technique, attend the Reading & Note-Taking Workshop offered by Learning Skills Services to develop a strategy that works for you. During this session, you’ll also learn effective reading comprehension skills, as well as how to review and edit your notes after class to ensure that you’ll remember the content later.
Join the Reading & Note-Taking workshop on September 19th from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Sound & Moving Images Library, Room 124.
3. Cite it Right! Workshop
Learning to cite your research is one of the most important aspects of academic and professional writing. Citations help ensure academic integrity: a set of conventions that scholars follow in their work to establish credibility. To make sure that you’re attributing your research correctly in your essays, attend the Cite it Right! Workshop offered by the Citation Station in the Learning Commons on the second floor of Scott Library to learn how to use different citation standards. If you just need a refresher on citations, take a look at the “Using and Citing Sources” module in the Student Papers and Academic Research Kit (SPARK) online.
Attend the Cite it Right! Workshop on November 7th from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Scott Library, Room 530.
4. Attend a drop-in session at the Writing Centre
Although this one isn’t a workshop per se, the Writing Centre at York U is a great resource for students, especially if you haven’t written many academic papers or proposals before. The Writing Centre offers assistance in-person and online. To speak with a writing instructor, you can schedule a 50-minute appointment or an online video chat using the Writing Centre’s online booking system. Drop-in sessions are also available: to attend a 15-minute session, check in at Reception in Room S311 in the Ross Building from Monday to Friday between 10:30 am to 3:30 pm.
5. Challenging Negative Thinking to Improve Mood Workshop
If you find that negative thoughts are affecting your studies, work and social life, you may want to attend the Challenging Negative Thinking to Improve Mood workshop offered by Personal Counselling Services. The Personal Counselling Services workshops are designed to help students overcome or respond to obstacles and challenges as well as develop skills that promote success. This session is the first of a three-part workshop to help you focus on your personal well-being. Personal Counselling Services offers a range of helpful workshops, and if you attend five of them, you can earn your Personal Development Certificate. These workshops can also be used as part of your Co-Curricular Record. The Challenging Negative Thinking to Improve Mood workshop is taking place on September 18, 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm at the Bennett Centre, Room N110.
