Congratulations, future Lion(ess)! If you are reading this, you’ve most likely received an offer of admission and are flirting with the possibility of spending the next four years at York University. The excitement of receiving an acceptance letter is great, but it can momentarily wane when you realize the additional steps necessary to make your dream a reality. Lucky for you, I’m here to act as your fairy godmother and will help you check off the things you need to do to successfully start your journey at York!
Offer of Admission
- Go to your MyFile account, log in with your York student number (provided in your confirmation email when you applied to York U) and date of birth and check the details of your offer (or the status of your application, if you’re still waiting for an offer of admission).Yes, getting an offer of admission to York is (almost) as exciting as getting into Hogwarts!
- Your official letter of admission to York will include some conditions. If your offer says it’s “conditional,” it may mean that you have been accepted based on some high grade 11 marks (way to go, scholar!) because those for grade 12 were not yet available, so you will need to keep up your grade average to have your offer remain intact. Other conditions might refer to missing prerequisites for your program of choice, a lack of required documentation or the like. Take the time to read your offer carefully; you don’t want to miss any important information!
- Now that you understand the conditions of your offer — what are you waiting for? 100+ clubs and more than 50,000 students are excited to meet you! To accept your offer, log in to your MyFile account and follow the instructions. If you need a little more time, remember you’ve got until June 1, 2016, to accept an offer of admission to an Ontario university. The earlier you accept the better, though: it ensures you will get a seat in all the classes you want.
- Speaking of classes, after accepting your offer, you may also want to get to the meat of university life. Choosing courses! Once again, your trusty friend MyFile is the key to success. Depending on your program of choice, your course selection process might look different. Log on to MyFile and select “Book/manage my enrolment appointment”. If you see “Book/Manage my Appointment” in the Advising column beside your program name, it means you need to book an enrolment appointment. An adviser will help you pick the right courses for your first year. If you see “Learn When Your Online Course Enrolment Begins”, it means you will be doing your course enrolment online. Don’t worry, you will be provided with instructions! Online enrolment means that your program is part of a transition program called YU Start where upper-year students facilitate chat rooms over the summer and provide resources to help you transition from high school to university.
- After you begin enrolling in courses, you will need to send in a $300 registration deposit. You can only do so through telephone or online banking. This fee is part of your tuition (not an additional cost) and is used to not only secure your spot in classes but to unlock resources for you to become to a super cool university student. One of those resources? Residence! If you live out of town, you’re going to need a place to crash for a while. You’re guaranteed a place in residence if you apply before June 1!
Speaking of fees, tuition can be tough to manage and pay for. First, you’re going to want to fill out a Student Financial Profile (which you can do through MyFile). It’s essentially a profile of who you are and what resources you currently have available, so it helps the University better determine how to assist you financially (think on-campus jobs and the like). Second, check out all the scholarships York offers. Seriously, the University is giving you free money — what more could you ask for? Third, you might want to look into the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), which allows you to borrow money from the Ontario government temporarily to pay for school. It’s a loan, though, so you will have to pay this money back once you have graduated and secured a job. My fellow blogger Megan wrote a great post on how to deal with and manage OSAP funds.
Besides this nifty page to start you off, York has tons of resources and initiatives to help you in your journey from doe-eyed teenager to a well-rounded, messenger-bag-carrying, coffee-obsessed undergraduate. I, too, was once in your shoes — I found myself asking, is this the right school for me? What will happen? Who will I meet? The truth is that I don’t know exactly what your time at York will be like, and halfway through my second year, I still find myself asking a few of those questions. Yet university is an exciting, mind-opening opportunity, and at the end of the day, it is what YOU make of it, not how anyone else does. For me, university is about using one of my passions, writing, to reach and inspire students both through the YU Blog and the College newspaper that I am in charge of. Your story awaits to be written and York is a great setting to help you find your raison d’être!
