The holidays are officially over, and we as students have resumed our regular routines. Mine consists of drinking copious amounts of tea and trying to keep myself afloat amid the Winter semester. We’ve also entered a new year, and I’m sure you have set a few goals for yourself — perhaps to exercise more, spend less, or study harder. Today, we’re highlighting a resource you might already be vaguely familiar with that can help with all those things and more.
YU Connect is a one-stop shop for all extracurricular activities at York University. All you need is an active Passport York account to log in and see what new communities you might become part of.
The site primarily features all the active clubs on campus and lets you know how to connect with them. You can also check out pictures and upcoming events. Sometime back, my fellow blogger Megan wrote a blog post to help you navigate the plethora of clubs available and gave suggestions on how to find one based on your interests. Joining clubs is a great way for you not only to meet new people passionate about similar issues as you but also to hone fresh skills and become a well-rounded student. By taking on leadership roles within an organization, planning events and helping a club grow its membership, you can work on your soft skills — something that your Biomechanics textbook will not be able to do.
What you might not know about YU Connect is that by signing in with your Passport York account, you are able to keep track of all your co-curricular activity at York. You can log hours, add organizations and reflect on your experiences. A record of involvement can be extremely helpful, especially if you are considering graduate studies, further training in your field (e.g. medical school) or would like to give evidence to a future employer that you are indeed cut out to be a leader. It’s also a great memento to keep of all the ways you have contributed to York during your undergraduate career!
Don’t believe how rewarding getting involved can be? Well, recent alumnae Kren and Annelise can testify! Both women graduated York with an outstanding extracurricular record and have only good things to say about their experiences.
Essentially, let’s kick off 2016 by being proactive and reaching for the opportunities that are waiting for us to make the first move. YU Connect is a great place to start!
Do you use YU Connect? Are there any clubs you’d like to check out? Let us know in the comments or tweet me at @yorkustudents!
