Parapan Am: The Best Is Yet to Come

In continuing our coverage of anything and everything Games-related, last Friday night my colleague Rebecca and I once again headed down to the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium in celebration of the Opening Ceremony to experience a brilliant evening filled with fireworks, music, inspiration and, most important of all, Canadian spirit.

The Ceremony featured the Parade of Nations, where all the participating athletes came in with their heads held high, a performance by Francesco Yates (among others), cultural dance and music acts and, lastly, the lighting of the cauldron. It was truly a one-of-a-kind experience.

If you didn’t have the chance to see it with your own eyes, no worries! We’ve got you covered: take a peek the photos below:

Venezuela knew how to party…

After the Parade of Nations, the Doves of Peace flooded the skies overlooking the stadium.

Wild applause accompanied some of Canada’s most decorated para-athletic icons as they paraded down the track.

Can’t have a celebration without fireworks . . .
Carrying the iconic torch was a familiar Canadian face.
Rick Mercer!
Let the Games begin!

Behind the guitar and underneath the hair was Canadian musician Francesco Yates!

An incredible night for an incredible ceremony.

There you have it! With the conclusion of the Opening Ceremony comes the official continuation of the Games, Parapan Am-style. Be sure to keep an eye out for our continued coverage, as my colleague Rebecca and I will be heading down to Ryerson University this week to catch a bounce of Women’s Basketball (not sure if “bounce” is accepted basketball slang, but I’m gonna go with it), Canada vs. Brazil!

If you happen to be there with us, or find yourself at any Games-related events in the coming week, be sure snap some photos and send them our way at @yorkustudents. Hope to see you there!
