A huge component to mental and physical health and happiness is regular exercise. And although walking to your classes can be counted as a little bit of a workout, it is important to really get your blood pumping a few times a week. Here at York we have a fabulous fitness centre called Tait McKenzie. It is on the Keele Campus and close to Stong College and Residence. It’s very easy for students to sneak some exercise in between classes and there are many services offered to suit everyone’s needs.
The price to join the gym is extremely reasonable for students…just a base rate of $15 for the entire year! How it works is you pay this fee, and then they give you a shoe tag to wear on your sneakers whenever you come to use the facilities.
The fitness centre itself has a ton of treadmills, ellipticals and stationary bicycles which are great for cardio workouts. There is a lot of weight machines that target specific muscle groups, as well as free weights. The gym is stocked with exercise balls, foam rollers and matts to do a variety of workouts and stretches. It can get a bit crowded on the machines depending when you go, so it is useful to book the machines in advance from the front desk!
Tait McKenzie holds a swimming pool with regularly scheduled lane swims. This is another great way to get in a cardio workout and swimming is often easier on joints than other types of exercise.
If you are interested in taking classes, like dance, zumba or yoga classes these are available but usually for an additional charge. For many people, the class environment is useful to make it more enjoyable and to motivate you to work your hardest, so the extra price may be worth it!
Although it can be hard to find the motivation to exercise some days, the benefits are so huge that I highly recommend it. With exams approaching for university students, one of the many benefits to exercise is stress relief and increased mental focus. Try it out!
