Hi there! You’ve reached an older post on the #YUBlog that may no longer contain relevant or up-to-date information. For the latest posts on York University go to our homepage where you can also search for posts by topic.
So, you’ve accepted your offer to YorkU for a certain program or major and let’s say somewhere during your first year, you experience an “aha-moment!” Suddenly, you realize that maybe this program you’re in wasn’t such a good idea after all and it is not the right fit for you. This is the moment of truth. It is the height of decision-making for every student. Maybe that explains the reason you hate certain courses or are struggling to keep up. Anyway, you’re now faced with a decision to either pursue your passion or continue in this path just to please your parents. This has happened to me before and I know how tough it can be trying to figure out what path to take in life. I started out as an undecided major and used my first year to really decide what I wanted to do. I’m glad I made the right choice in making communication studies my major.
I once heard a story about a guy who became a medical doctor but only because his parents pressured him into it. Well, on his graduation day, his family planned a huge party with many people gathered. Then it was time to give his thank you speech. He told everyone he became a doctor because of his dad and announced that he was now going to pursue his real dream of becoming a musician. After that, he got up and left the party. Everyone was absolutely in dazed! So, the point here is that if you just got accepted into a program and suddenly decide to switch, that’s perfectly fine. Apply for a change of program and don’t wait until the last minute.
Book an appointment with an Academic Advisor: An advisor will be able to tell you if you meet the requirements to enter the program you’re interested in. They will also tell you what courses you need to take to be eligible to enter the program etc. I was an undecided major during my first year at YorkU.
Complete the program change forms online: These forms are located on the Registrar’s Office website. Using an online tool, the registrar’s office manages the requests for changing programs. Be sure to read all the information on the pages regarding eligibility and deadlines. Follow the instructions until you reach tab five. The final step is logging into your Passport York, accessing the forms to complete and submit them.
