Benefits of YorkU’s Dental and Health Plan

Do you know that as a full-time student, you are automatically enrolled into the health and dental plan at York University provided by York’s Federation of Students (YFS)? Many new and returning students like myself are not fully taking advantage of this opportunity and should.  Ideally, one is supposed to get a dental checkup and cleaning every year but I have not done mine in two years. I know! I know! It sounds totally gross but I generally take very good care of my teeth so I figured I would relax. Yet, I feel like it’s a disservice to myself not to use something I have been given and which clearly, I’ve paid for. So, I’m planning a dental visit very soon and have decided to do some research on coverage I could use to pay for my future visit.

Every student is automatically enrolled into the YFS Health and Dental plan. This means you are charged $241.49 for 12 months worth of health and dental coverage. For an additional charge, the plan can cover your child and or/spouse. It costs $468.84 to add one dependent and $579.65 to add more than one. If you do not want the plan, you can opt out before a certain deadline. While many students are tempted to opt out, its a worthy investment in your well-being. I remember looking at my tuition statement one day and thinking “what am I being charged this for?” I know the feeling of wanting to save that extra money but I highly recommend you keep it because it covers a lot of things and some of them are:

  • Dental: 75% up to $500.
  • Vision care: $100 for 24 months.
  • Eye Exam: $65 for up to 24 months.
  • Prescription drugs: 80% for up to $1000.
  • Chiropractic care, acupuncture, physiotherapy and other services : $25 per visit for up to $300.
  • Orthodontics: 100% up to $200 for 24 months.

For a full list of benefits, download the “My Benefits Plan Booklet” from the YFS website. To give you a rundown procedure of how to use your plans, I will be doing a post of my dental visit and how this coverage came in handy so stay tuned. For more information about the dental plan, just contact YFS through their website or call 416-736-2100 ext. 58066.
