Your Health and Exams Series: 2–Kale Fest at YUM

On-board to York

What’s with the kale addiction anyway?

As you may have noticed in my last blog post, my green smoothies mainly consist of Kale. I have been advised by my doctor that I suffer from low iron, so aside from the iron supplements–I try to take care of my health naturally and incorporate as much iron as possible.

Kale offers tremendous health benefits—and I love the taste. It’s great for people targeted by iron deficiency, which can have effects on nails, hair, and overall health causing fatigue.

  • Kale is high in iron…higher than spinach.
  • Low in calories and a great source of fibre.
  • High in Vitamin A, C, and K.
  • High in Calcium.
  • Good for eyes, skin, bones, prevents cancer and aids in weight loss.

Lucky for us at York – Fresh Vegetables are now at our door step. I checked out the York University Farmers Market (YUM) yesterday, and look what I found—Kale Fest happening at YUM sponsored by Regenesis@York + Health Education and Promotion! Check out the YUM newsletter.

The convenience of green smoothies, and healthy eating is available to you whether you are a commuter student or living on res! There is no reason to skip breakfast now. For YUM timing and location—check out Kira’s blog.

YUM is like being in health heaven. YUM has organic vegetables ranging from squash, leeks, kale, and reflects the vast majority of different cultures that come under one roof as students and staff. I could not leave the market without satisfying my sweet tooth. The smell of the fresh baked goods and sweets fills the place.

I indulged in a Birthday Cake lollipop and cannelloni form Peter Piper’s Pastry Shop. It was divine…oh sorry I meant it was YUM! Prices at the market are very reasonable, the dessert pieces I got were $2 each, and fresh produce ranged in price. There were hot meals being served, along with fresh bread. I bought egg bread for $4.

Time to indulge in dessert!

If you are visiting us, or making York U your first or second home for the next few years; if you are in the middle of exam period right now–make sure you head over to the Farmers Market, and take charge of your health!

Safe travels till next time!
