On campus, there a few places that offer evening to night time entertainment. The Absinthe Pub and Coffee Shop, affectionately known as The Ab, is one of them. It’s a special place that is run by students, something no other pub can claim. It’s located in the basement of Winters College on campus, and is favourite haunt of many students in the Fine Arts Faculty; however, all are welcome at this cozy location.
The Ab serves up a variety of food and baked goods, from the traditional nachos, to a daily special like shepherd’s pie. They also serve cookies, and chocolate bars in case you have a craving for something sweet. Being that this is a pub, they serve a variety of alcoholic beverages to those 19 and over. But don’t worry if you are 18 and under can still come to the Ab and hang out with everyone!
Throughout the week The Ab hosts different themed nights. For example, almost every Tuesday is acoustic night, where the talented musicians at York University have a chance to perform. It’s really fun to go and hang out and listen to some music after you are done classes for the day. In the past there have also been events like Tacky Sweater night before the winter holidays!
Thursday is traditionally pub night at many universities, and the Absinthe is no exception. There are always an abundance of students out at the pub on Thursdays, and line ups can get very long if you don’t head over early. In my experience, going over at 8 o clock is a good plan so that you don’t have to wait for too long.
Going to a student run pub on campus has many perks. The biggest is that everyone that is there is a student at York, and therefore you already have lots in common with them. It’s easy to strike up a conversation and make friends in the atmosphere that the Ab provides.
During your time at York, it would be a crime if you didn’t participate for at least one night at a part of this campus’s best kept secrets. Grab a group of friends and head over to the Absinthe for a great evening!
