Whether you’re gearing up for your first year or are a returning student, living on campus can enhance your university experience by providing community, convenience and a strong connection to York student life. Here’s everything you need to know about applying for residence at York.

When can I apply?

Check back on York’s Housing & Conference Services website throughout the year for more information about when applications are open.

Don’t forget about York's residence guarantee deadlines! These deadlines are crucial, as applying by them guarantees you a spot in residence. After this deadline, housing options may be limited, so it’s important to submit your application as soon as possible.

How do I apply?

Applying for residence at York is easy!

On York's Housing website, click "Apply now." After logging in with your Passport York ID (or your 9-digit student ID and date of birth), you'll be redirected to the Housing Application page, where you can start your application.

The Housing Application PDF also lists out detailed steps on how to submit your application.

Make sure to review all guidelines carefully, as they detail eligibility, required documents and important dates. While deadlines may vary, it’s always best to apply early to ensure you secure a spot.

On-campus vs. off-campus housing: What’s right for you?

When deciding where to live, you’ll need to consider whether on-campus or off-campus housing is the right choice for you.

  • On-campus residence provides a unique opportunity to build community, stay close to classes and immerse yourself in student life.

  • Off-campus housing may offer more independence and flexibility, including the opportunity to manage your own schedule, commute and responsibilities.

Residence options across York’s three campuses

York University has 10 residences spread across its three campuses: Keele, Glendon and Markham. Each campus offers different housing options to suit a range of preferences.

  • Keele Campus: York’s largest campus, with several residence buildings.

  • Glendon Campus: A bilingual campus offering a more intimate and quiet residence experience.

  • Markham Campus: A modern campus with new residence options designed for students studying in this academic space.

Types of residences at York

York offers a range of residence types, each with its own features and amenities. Your choice depends on your personal preferences for privacy, community and facilities:

  • Traditional rooms (single or double): These rooms have a classic dorm-style setup, typically with shared bathrooms on your floor. Single rooms house one student, while double rooms house two. This option offers a great balance between privacy and socializing.

  • Suite- style: Suite-style residences provide more privacy, featuring shared living spaces and private bathrooms for each suite.

  • Apartment style: For students looking for greater independence, apartment-style residences come with private kitchens and living areas, providing the most autonomy.

Dining plans: What to expect

Some of York’s residence options require a Dining Plan, providing convenient access to food on campus. There are different plan options to suit various student needs and schedules, from basic to all-you-can-eat plans. Take some time to review the Dining Plans available to find one that fits your lifestyle.

Pro tip: To maximize your convenience, consider supplementing your meal plan with quick snacks or non-perishable items to keep in your room for late-night study sessions.

Quick tips for moving and packing

As you prepare for your new adventure at York, here are some packing tips to help make your move smooth and stress-free:

  • Essentials: Don’t forget your bedding, toiletries and school supplies.

  • Storage solutions: Maximize your space by bringing under-bed storage or closet organizers.

  • Personal touches: Add some personal flair to your room with posters, an armchair pillow or other cozy items.

  • Shower caddy and shoes: These might be easy to overlook, but they’re key for shared bathroom setups.
