For this post, the #YUBlog sourced answers to York students’ and their parents’ frequently asked questions about the 2018 Summer Session on social media. Please note that you can find a full list of up-to-date student FAQs on the Labour Update website.
Are summer session dates changing?
Summer courses for SU and S1 will begin on May 22, 2018 (with the exception of courses that have received exemption from Senate Executive). Students should note that summer course offerings have been reduced as a result of the labour disruption.
Students can find summer term dates and approved exceptions to those dates online on the Undergraduate Summer 2018 Sessional Dates website. The official exam period for the SU term has been extended to August 31, 2018.
Where can I find summer courses that are being offered at York University?
The modified timetable of confirmed Summer 2018 courses being offered is now available online on the Course Timetable Search website. Enrolment for the 2018 Summer Session is now open, and courses are filling quickly. After you select the summer courses that you would like to take, please go to the Registration and Enrolment Module to enrol.
If you are already enrolled in summer courses within the list of confirmed available courses, please note that those enrolments have been maintained. If you are enrolled in a course that is no longer being offered, you will be notified beginning the week of Monday, May 14, 2018.
How will I learn about additional course offerings being added to the 2018 Summer Session Timetable?
Students are encouraged to check the Course Timetable Search website regularly in the coming weeks for additional summer course options. Students will also be notified of additional summer course offerings on social media @YorkUStudents on Twitter and Facebook.
I checked the modified timetable for available summer 2018 courses, and the courses I planned to take are no longer being offered. What are my summer course completion options?
If the summer courses you planned to take at York University are no longer being offered, you have the option to:
Enrol in an available course: If the summer courses you planned to take are no longer being offered, you may check the the Course Timetable Search website to see if you can substitute an available course. Enrolments for the modified Summer 2018 Session are now available, and students are encouraged to register as soon as possible as spaces are filling quickly.
Apply for a Letter of Permission (LOP) to take courses at another institution to complete credits toward your York degree or certificate: York University provides students with the option to apply for a letter of permission to enrol with another institution to complete credits towards your York U degree/certificate. The usual eligibility criteria for Summer 2018 letters of permission has been relaxed due to the disruption and the administrative fee waived (host administrative fees may still apply). Students can review the Letter of Permission website for more information about this option.
Enrol in courses online through another institution: This flexible option allows you to study on your own time and complete courses at your own pace. Visit eCampus Ontario to find available courses.
If my Summer 2018 courses are cancelled due to the labour disruption, will I receive a full refund?
Yes. If your courses are cancelled, you will automatically be de-enrolled and will receive a full refund for your tuition fees for those courses. No further action is required on your part to receive your refund. The course(s) from which you have been de-enrolled will appear with a refund on your Student Account Online Statement within one calendar day.
Will enrolment (for OSAP purposes) be confirmed at the start of classes, May 22?
OSAP confirmations of enrolment will be processed within 15 days of the term start date (May 22) for students who have completed their OSAP application before April 20, 2018. Please check your OSAP account for updates regarding the release of your funding and pending requirements if your file is incomplete. If there have been changes to your course load, please refer to the “How to apply for OSAP aid for the summer session” web page to ensure you have submitted the correct OSAP application for the summer term based on your actual course load. Confirmations of enrolment will continue throughout the summer for OSAP applications by date received order.
How will my OSAP be affected if I choose to apply for a Letter of Permission and complete courses at another institution?
If you plan to apply for a Letter of Permission to complete summer courses at another institution, the courses you take at the host institution will count towards your OSAP course load in the same way as if it were a York U course. If you choose this option, you will need to update your OSAP information.
If you will not be taking any courses at York University and will be attending courses at another postsecondary institution during the summer term, you should apply for OSAP through your host institution (where you will be paying tuition) provided that the summer term at the host institution is 12 weeks or more. If you already applied for OSAP through York University, you will need to close your OSAP application with York University for the summer term and apply through your host institution. If you will be enrolled in a full-time course load and your study weeks at the other school is less than 12 weeks, you can apply through York University if you received OSAP funding during Fall/Winter 17/18 study period as a full-time student.
If you are taking courses at York and at another university concurrently, either one of the universities can administer the OSAP application (normally the one at which you are taking the majority of your courses).
