York University is dedicated to creating a safe learning environment for its students, and there are many safety resources available to ensure that the York U campuses are secure. I have been a York U student for four years and have lived both on campus and in the nearby Village during that time. In other words, I’ve spent a lot of time on campus during the course of my undergraduate degree, and I have always felt safe thanks to services like campus security, the goSAFE evening walking service and the Village Shuttle Service.
If you missed our previous #YUBlog post, “Campus Safety Resources at York U“, you might not be aware of all the safety resources available to York U students, staff and faculty. Today, I thought I’d shine a spotlight on some of the resources I’ve used and found to be very helpful.
York U Safety App
York U offers students many on- and off-campus safety resources, and one of them fits in your pocket: the York U Safety App! By downloading the app, you can get real-time security updates and access a directory of York U’s safety resources. Tip: this is also the first place where you can find out if classes are cancelled due to a snow day, which is a reason to download it right there.
Features of the York U Safety app include:
- A list of emergency contacts, including 911 and York U Security Services;
- A flashlight;
- York U Security’s email address and a method for sending them photos of emergency issues;
- Campus maps;
- A goSAFE call button and link to their website;
- Village Shuttle Services schedule;
- York U security information; and
- A list of all the counselling and support services available at York U.
The York U Safety App was created in 2013 to help students and staff easily access campus safety news and provide a directory of the University’s safety resources. The app includes all the resources you need to get home safely: the app has a direct call feature to campus security, goSAFE and even 911 in emergencies. Please note: Campus Security is here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support the York community in all safety-related matters. You should immediately report any unsafe situations to York Security by calling 416-736-5333, extension 33333 from an office phone or by using the call feature in the app. If the situation is an emergency, call 911 first and then York Security. If you have a general safety question, call 416-650-8000, extension 58000 from an office phone.
The York U Safety App even includes an emergency alarm feature and a flashlight. If you need a little extra light while you’re walking home with goSAFE or need to quickly signal people in the surrounding area, these features can be very helpful. If I haven’t already convinced you to download the app, check out this video to learn about all its perks:
The app is available on iPhone, Android and Blackberry and can easily be downloaded from app stores or on the York U Safety website.
The York U Safety App is part of the “Safer Together” initiative. To get a more detailed explanation of all the safety resources available, take a look at York U’s Safety Community Resources website.
goSAFE is another excellent campus safety resource that ensures that students, staff and faculty members do not have to walk alone on campus in the evenings. goSAFE hires students to accompany members of the York U community to their cars, residence building or buses. If you need to walk back to your residence after an evening class or want to go downtown and need to catch the bus, you can call goSAFE and two trained volunteers will walk you to your destination or wait with you until your bus arrives. You can call goSAFE at 416-736-5454 or you can contact them directly by using any Indoor Safety Phone, Blue Light Emergency Phone or the York U Safety App. goSAFE operates on the Keele campus from 6pm to 2am during the fall/winter terms and 8pm to 2am in the summer. If you are located on the Glendon campus, goSAFE operates from 6pm to 11pm during the fall/winter term. If you would like someone to walk with you when goSAFE is not operating, please contact York Security Services at 416-650-8000.
Village Shuttle Services
If you live off-campus, the Village Shuttle is an easy and secure way to get home. Although the Village is not part of the Keele campus, York U acknowledges that many students reside there and need a safe way to get home. York U set up the Village Shuttle program to pick students up at Vari Hall and drop them off at various locations throughout the Village. This shuttle services operates between 6pm and 2am during the fall/winter term. If you live in the Village, review the Village Shuttle schedule for a complete list of drop-off locations and times.
These are just a few resources available to York U students that can help you get home safely, stay up-to-date on campus security news and make sure you never miss a snow day! Remember, these campus safety resources are here to ensure that all students, staff and faculty can enjoy a secure learning environment. If you need assistance or want to report an unsafe situation, don’t hesitate to reach out to York’s safety services: they’re here to help!
