If you are an international student who will be attending York University for the Fall 2017 term, welcome to campus (and Canada)! As an international student, your time abroad will include making new friends, studying your chosen subject, exploring the city of Toronto and expanding your worldview. The York U community is proud to be a part of this exciting time in your life and provides international students with the following on-campus resources to help make Canada your home-away-from-home.

As a gentle reminder, international students should currently be in the process of obtaining a student visa in order to book your flight. You may want to read our previous blog post “International Student Guide, Part 1: Advance Preparations” for more information.

On-Campus Resources for International Students

York International

Your first stop for any questions you may have about your arrival in Canada or campus life should be the York International website. York International supports all visiting international students with a range of topics, including academics, English as a Second Language, immigration information, health insurance, finances and more. If you are an international student who is new to the York U campus, you may want to review York International’s Pre-Arrival Checklist to prepare for your transition to Canada. This checklist includes information about travelling to Canada, what to expect when you arrive and directions for getting to campus. Global Connections at York International

Have questions about student life at York? Who better to answer your inquiries than other York U students? The Global Connections team is made up of Global Liaisons; multilingual, multicultural senior students who help international students navigate York University. You can connect with Global Liaisons on Facebook to chat with them online.

The Global Connections team assists new international students by providing the following resources:

  • Pre-Arrival Workshops: During the summer, York International hosts pre-arrival webinars called Global Connections about important topics such as housing, life in Toronto, navigating public transit in the city and more. You can find video recordings of these sessions on the Global Connections website.
  • Coffee Break Sessions and the Global Peer Program: The Global Connections team holds Coffee Break Sessions on Tuesday and Thursday, 2pm to 4pm at the Global Café in 244 York Lanes where international students can meet each other and chat with York International staff. You can also join the Global Peer Program to connect with upper-year peer mentors who can help you navigate campus life at York U.
  • Global Community on Video: This series of instructional videos can answer your questions about life as a York U student.

York International Student Welcome Booths and York’s RED Zone

If you find yourself on campus unsure of where to go, international student welcome booths will be located at Vari Hall, the Student Centre, Complex I and Complex II residences, Pond Road Residence and at Glendon campus from August 21 to September 8. You can visit these booths for information about the York U resources available to international students and get directions to important buildings on campus.

International students should also consider booking a campus tour with York’s RED Zone team. This friendly group of Student Ambassadors helps orient new students by assisting with inquiries about transportation, events, orientation and on-campus jobs. You can chat with RED Zone team members in person at Vari Hall from Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, or you can call them at (416) 736-2100 ext. 55481. International Student Orientation with York International

Attending Orientation is one of the best ways to get to know the York U community and meet new people. Register for the International Student Orientation if you haven’t already. Orientation usually includes a half-day visit to your faculty or program, so visit your faculty website for more information about your Academic Orientation. During York U’s International Student Orientation, you will learn where to access essential information about health and safety initiatives at York, the University Health Insurance Plan, how to meet international peers, and more.

YU Start Program

YU Start is a resource that connects new students with the wider York community. Students use the YU Start New Student Transition Program to enrol in courses: to access an enrolment tutorial, visit the How to Enrol page on the Registrar’s Office website. The YU Start site has a chat function to help you connect with fellow classmates, student leaders, faculty members and student services staff. The YU Start platform provides information about campus life and the support services that are available to students, including the resources offered through The Office of Student Community Relations and The Sexual Violence Response and Support office.

Housing Services

If you are currently searching for suitable housing options, you may want to check the York U Housing Services website for information about on-campus housing and resources for students living off-campus. If you are living in residence, you should receive an email from Housing Services with information about move-in times and your building, as well as what you will find in your dorm room and the items you may wish to bring. If you will be living off-campus, take a look at the Housing Services Resources website for renters.
