On one hand, your new independence gives you the freedom to manage your own schedule, meet new people and try new experiences. Yet university also brings new responsibilities, such as learning to be mindful of your mental health and wellness as a busy student.
“Mindfulness” refers to being aware of your feelings, thoughts, and mental state in the present moment. Learning to be aware of your mental health and identifying the support you need is a crucial life skill, especially for students.
Learning to be Mindful of Mental Health and Wellness
If you feel that your mental health might be negatively affecting your learning abilities, such as your memory retention or ability to concentrate, you may want to take advantage of York University’s student health resources. From Mental Health Disability Services to Personal Counselling and more, York U supports students with a range of mental health and wellness services. Read on for a list of York U and external resources that can help you manage your mental health and wellness. York University is committed to ensuring that all students have the support to reach their full potential and provides the following resources to create a safe and healthy campus.

On-Campus Mental Health Resources
Disability Services at York U provides educational support for students with alternative physical, sensory, mental, learning, and medical abilities. To register with Disability Services, students must provide documentation of their disability and fill out the Disability Services Student Questionnaire. Disability Services have also recently released an app which provides students and staff with general information on all accessibility services at York U. You can download the app on the Disability Services website.
Mental Health Disability Services
Depending on your circumstances, there are different forms of academic accommodations which can be made through the help of your academic advisor at Mental Health Disability Services. To register with this unit, you can fill out a MHDS Medical Documentation Form. Once you have registered, students are able to make drop-in appointments on Monday and Wednesday from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. It should be noted that students will not be seen before 2:30pm and appointments will not extend beyond 3:30pm, so you should visit the office before 3:10pm to ensure that you can see an advisor.
Personal Counselling Services at York U aims to help students achieve their goals and manage university life by providing counselling and personal development workshops for those struggling with a wide range of mental health concerns and personal issues. Personal Counselling Services operates Monday to Friday on an appointment basis. The office is open from 9am to 4:30pm and is located on the first floor of the Bennett Centre for Student Services. The Healthy Student Initiative
One of the best ways to practice mindfulness and be aware of your mental health and wellness is to practice meditation. The Healthy Student Initiative hosts free, daily Mindfulness Meditation sessions on the York U campus. During these half-hour drop-in meditation tutorials, students can learn to apply the techniques of meditation to their daily lives to increase their awareness of their mental health and relieve stress. Appletree Medical Clinic
The physicians at Appletree Medical Clinic in York Lanes are well-versed in mental health advisory. The clinic accepts walk-in appointments and has a psychiatrist who can be accessed by appointments made through referrals from your family doctor. You can make an appointment at the clinic or check wait times online through the Patient Portal. To reach the Appletree Medical Clinic in York Lanes, you can call 647-722-2370 or email email@example.com. The clinic is open from 8:30am to 6pm from Monday to Friday.
Emergency and Counselling Hotlines
If you are unable to access in-person mental health services, you may find it helpful to consult with trained professionals by calling hotlines. Good2Talk, which can be reached at 1-866-925-5454, is a free, confidential post-secondary student hotline that provides individuals between the ages of 17 and 25 with professional counselling and referral information on mental health resources. Similar to Good2Talk, the Mental Health Helpline provides information about mental health services in Ontario. Lastly, the Toronto Distress Centre provides 24/7 telephone support 365 days a year to those experiencing emotional distress or mental health issues. The Toronto Distress Centre also provides community outreach, in-person crisis response programs and workshops to help educate others on mental health.
As a student, it is incredibly important to understand that you are not alone in your journey towards wellness. For after hours assistance, call 911 in an emergency or consider accessing a health clinic or calling a counselling helpline.
