With more than 300 clubs at York University, it’s no wonder that students often feel overwhelmed when deciding on extracurricular activities for the year ahead. Is this club the right fit for me? Does it offer the things that I want? Is there opportunity for growth? To answer these questions and more, today I present to you yet another organization at YorkU for the Club Spotlight series — just in time for the annual Festival Village, which features more than 200 clubs and all Colleges on campus. In first year, Festival Village was one of my favourite events — it is the perfect opportunity for you to explore the opportunities on York’s Keele campus and enjoy free food, free orientation kits, free giveaways and more!
Without further ado, today’s Club Spotlight: YU AppDroid
What is YU AppDroid?
Inspired by Hyouka (an anime series), YU AppDroid is a club at YorkU created by a Computer Engineering student, Simon Ma, in May of 2014. AppDroid is uniquely designed to create an environment in which “York students and faculty members can collaborate to create apps, exchange information about the app world, as well as provide feedback and constructive criticism regarding the app-development process.”
What is YU AppDroid’s mission?
To create and test apps for: Android, iOS and Blackberry (using Java and C/C++ languages).
What are some apps the club has created?
Apps in progress
- Image Viewer
- Calendar/ Events Viewer
- Text File Reader
- Food App
Apps for future projects
- Bethune College App
Apps for preview
- Geo Quiz v1.0
- Tinkle Messenger
- GPA Calculator
Why should students join AppDroid?
Simon Ma says that “students should join our club if they have interest in or ideas for developing mobile applications. AppDroid offers club space for students to bring forth new ideas and to collaborate with other club members for developing apps. We offer Android and programming workshops for students, along with free food!” Sounds pretty cool, right?
What events or opportunities can new members expect for the upcoming year?
The club plans to host more app-development workshops for Android and Java. If there is enough interest, it might even offer app competitions, where students will win prizes for participation.

If you are interested in joining the club, send an email to YU AppDroid at email@example.com, join their Facebook group or directly become a club member via YU Connect.
